Top Five Fantasy Football Quarterbacks- Week Eight
The priciest arm is joined by some bargains in the top five fantasy football quarterbacks in week eight.
5- Cam Newton (CAR), $12,000 vs (SEA)
Newton didn’t live up to my top rank on last week’s top five fantasy football quarterbacks, but he didn’t lay an egg either. His legs have helped contribute to the point scoring bottom line the last two weeks as he’s compiled 148 yards rushing in those contests combined. Newton’s floor is very high, and that’s a rarity for a quarterback at his price point. The reason for the security is consistency, he’s thrown more than 30 passes and totaled over 200 yards passing in all but one contest, and he’s thrown for at least one score in each game. Newton is taking care of the football this year, having thrown just three interceptions. His ability to score points on the ground creates a unique situation where a quarterback has both a high floor and a sky high ceiling. Finally, don’t be deterred using him against the Seahakws, the 2014 version of the Legion of Boom has been more giving than the Super Bowl winning unit, ranking 15th in pass coverage at Pro Football Focus (PFF) and 22nd in pass defense at Football Outsiders (FO).
4- Ryan Tannehill (MIA), $12,650 @ (JAX)
It seems like eons ago that rumors swirled about Tannehill possibly being benched prior to the Dolphins game against the Raiders in London. It’s probably fair to speculate that the rumors of a benching lit a fire under Tannehill’s ass given his performance since that time. The third-year signal caller has thrown for a pair of scores in the three straight contests, starting with the showdown with the Raiders, and he’s rushed for no less than 35 yards in each of those games. Dual-threat quarterbacks are dreamy, and Tannehill’s athleticism is translating into success on the ground. His arm hasn’t generated gaudy numbers, but his passing has been respectable and the high volume has been there (Tannehill ranks 14th in pass attempts this year). The Dolphins are currently six point favorites in a game with a 42.5 total according to Vegas Insider, and that leaves plenty of points to be scored against a Jaguars defense that PFF ranks 29th in pass coverage and FO ranks 20th defending the pass.
3- Aaron Rodgers (GB), $16,700 @ (NO)
Rodgers is the quarterback in the top five fantasy quarterbacks this week that I expect to be the highest scorer, but he’s also the most expensive signal caller, and thus, he’s not the highest ranked passer. Rodgers has earned the highest PFF QB Rating thus far this year, ranks third with 18 touchdown tosses, and he’s thrown just one interception. Also, as usual, he’s racking up huge chunks of yards ranking sixth with 7.93 Yds/Att. The Saints will serve as little more than a speed bump on Rodgers’ way to an all out aerial assault. Their pass defense is pitiful, ranking 30th at FO and 31st in pass coverage at PFF. The current total of 56 for the Packers and Saints game is huge, and by far the highest that week. Even as a small underdog (1.5 points), Rodgers can be expected to pile up fantasy points in bunches.
2- Russell Wilson (SEA), $15,050 @ (CAR)
Wilson has sandwiched two high fantasy point scoring efforts around a dud in his last three games, and he ran for over 100 yards in each of his monstrous games. He has a three game streak of reaching the end zone using his legs, and his 327 yards rushing easily lead players at the quarterback position. In fact, his yardage total on the ground is the 21st highest total among all players. The Super Bowl winning quarterback’s running ability helps make up for his low pass attempt volume. When Wilson does air it out, he’s good. He ranks eighth in PFF QB Rating, tied for 13th with 10 passing touchdowns, and he’s thrown only two interceptions. One year after being an elite defense, the Panthers are a leaky mess, and one that will allow Wilson to score big with his legs and his arm. They rank 30th in pass coverage and 23rd in run defense at PFF, and FO ranks them 27th defending the pass and 29th stopping the run. All the makings of a big game are there for Wilson as he looks to stop the Seahawks’ two game slide.
1- Tony Romo (DAL), $12,750 vs (WAS)
DeMarco Murray is rightfully getting most of the love in the Cowboys offense, but make no mistake, Romo has been damn good too. After a slow start in his first two games, Romo has been a touchdown tossing machine throwing for multiple scores in five straight, and a total of 12 touchdowns in that time span. He’s also got a nice run of four straight games in which he’s bested 250 yards passing. For the year, Romo ranks sixth in PFF QB Rating, tied for fifth in touchdown passes, and even rounds out the top-10 in passing yards. At his price, Romo would be an acceptable selection against just about any defense, but he’s a steal against Washington. Washington ranks dead last in pass coverage according to PFF, and FO ranks them 24th against the pass. Romo is a must play this weekend.
